Tooning is Awesome!

• Tooning is fun! (You know it and I know it – pushing and pulling and twisting and turning those features is truck-loads of fun.)
• Tooning is cool! (Caricatures are fashionable today. I should know with the number of inquiries that land in my inbox.)
• Tooning is harmless (No Jagged Edges, no violence, just some humor and some wit.)
• Tooning can help you relieve your stress! (Ah, the feeling that you get when you toon your class-bully or your boss – it cannot be explained, only experienced.)

well, go on. Add your own thing 🙂 The point is Tooning is simply awesome!

So where’s the problem?

Well.

Tooning requires a certain skill, and it’s called drawing 😦 There are some caricaturing apps out there that detect faces and apply some uniform deformation to the face for you – but it isn’t a true caricature.

Why?

If you’ve read my book “Evolution of a Caricaturist-How to Draw Caricatures”, you know that caricaturing is about observing people and deciding upon a few features and their exaggerations. Most of us are excellent at figuring out what is comic and what is not, which image of a certain person looks more like him or her, and so on. When this decision-making is taken away from us and given to a software program, we get canned deformations and not caricatures…certainly not caricatures that are done by us. For me, as a caricaturist, it was important that the decision-making stayed with the user – and this got me thinking.

How was this App Born?

As the Visualizer of the Grouchy Gremlins team and a practicing caricaturist, I often played with the concept of separating the mechanical part of caricaturing (drawing) from the cognitive and artistic part of it (observation and intuition.) What if we could let the computer do what it did best, and left all the artistic decision-making to the user? Could we then have an app that could team up with the user to help him or her create funny and expressive caricatures with sufficient likeness?

Some hectic programming ensued and we got the Proof-of-Concept done. I tested it by making innumerable caricatures – and the results were always extremely encouraging. Next we prototyped – and realized that it was actually possible to bring the fun of caricaturing faces to everyone’s finger-tips. True that you won’t create a whole composition using this app – you won’t change a photo from a jousting match into this scene of a Governor’s Joust – but if you want to caricature for fun…and enjoy the process too, we think we’ve nailed it for you 🙂 (Here’s a caricature that I did of David Cameron as part of the Beta-testing of Toonsie Roll.)

And then we even tried taking it beyond. We didn’t want to stop at just caricaturing faces, but  we wanted to embellish them with wit and emojis that are custom-made to suit the art of caricature, present it as an actual work of art, and share it with friends.

Yes, it is the best Caricaturing App for tooning-enthusiasts 🙂

Caricature Samples Done Using Toonsie Roll :

This is an evolving section. I’ll continue to update it as I keep testing Toonsie Roll (See? Testing an app could loads of fun.)

(As the user of Toonsie Roll, you decide upon the right exaggeration (which doesn’t kill the likeness) by intuitively selecting one of the three toons that it presents to you – then you choose the closest toon, and toon it further, once again getting three toons from the earlier toon. The exaggerations are calibrated to ensure that the image changes little by little – enabling you to go on caricaturing until you find an optimum level.)

(In this caricature of Obama, you see an expression of amusement mixed with the “oh, no. Not again!” factor. The final artwork has been “Artified” to give it a slightly vintage look. There are many different looks that you can create with Toonsie Roll. Once you start using the app, I plan to add a few tutorials on how to create different looks using the app.)

 

Kim Kardashian’s “Toonsie Roll” Caricature.

(I didn’t really want to toon the most famous Kardashian sister (you won’t find her painting on my blog) but I was sorta brow-beaten into creating this one. Among the options that Toonsie Roll presented, there were many that made her look totally hilarious – but when it comes to caricaturing women, I like to stay safe and not tread upon their vanity, so I stayed with caricaturing her high cheek-bones (that are way to high) and her lips and pout. The look that you see here is the “Newspaper” effect, but I love playing with “Random” so I played around to create this old-idiot-box look. Do check out the caption – “North or West?” I don’t think she loses any sleep thinking about how she’d be naming her next two kids. Any guesses?)
